Generally speaking, thin stone does not exceed 1 1/2 inches in thickness and does not exceed 12 pounds per square foot.
Thin stone is a facing product that does not require footings, ledges, or traditional wall ties. Using proper technique, thin stone can be supported solely by the wall itself.
Building bricks are made up mainly of clay and spend about a week inside of a kiln creating a lightweight, porous product. Pavers are created from a mix of shale and clay and typically spend 2-3 times longer in a kiln creating a very strong, and very heavy brick.
ASTM standards allows for a percentage of “breakage”. These brick can most often be used where a shorter length of brick is required, such as an inside corner or around obstructions.
While the cost of a bigger brick is slightly higher than a modular size, this cost is usually offset by a decrease in labor cost. Many contractors bid by the brick and less material equals less labor.
